Glenshee is the quintessential Highland glen. Its name translates as the ‘glen of the faeries’ and it is certainly a very magical place that will enchant anyone who visits the area.

Glenshee starts at Bridge of Cally and runs north to the Glenshee Ski Centre, one of the oldest in Scotland and which offers the UK’s most extensive skiing and snowboarding facilities during the winter season.

During the rest of the year, the area hosts a range of other outdoor activities, including mountain biking, walking, rock climbing, kayaking, angling, nature and bird watching – and there’s even a nine-hole golf course in the glen.

The A93 road, part of General Wade’s military road from Perth to Fort George, runs through the glen to the Cairnwell Pass, which at an elevation of 2,200 feet (670 metres) makes it the highest public road in the UK and the highest point to the scenic Snow Roads route. The spectacular route has featured in many a vintage vehicle enthusiasts’ itinerary and is popular with motorcyclists.

The Glen of the Faeries was also home for a number of years to Hamish Henderson, the poet, songwriter, communist, intellectual, soldier and accomplished folk song collector who is widely credited as being the catalyst for the folk revival in Scotland. The cottage where he grew up is still there, and, in 2019 a huge portrait of Hamish as a young man was created on the hillside opposite his former home by Dundee-based artist Martin McGuinness as part of the launch of the Cateran Ecomuseum.
