Our favourite places to stay in Visit Perthshire’s Cateran Country

Posted on 18 July 20233 years ago

We have a wide range of accommodation options here in east Perthshire with something to suit all tastes and budgets.

Whether you are looking for a stylish hotel break in Blairgowrie – the largest town in Perthshire – a luxury boutique guest house stay, self-catering in picturesque cottages, log cabins or treehouses, a stay in a historic Scottish castle, an off-grid shepherd’s hut experience, or a night under the stars in a tent, you can find it all in Cateran Country.

Our accommodation providers pride themselves on the warmth of the welcome they offer guests and many use locally-sourced products and goods.

The accommodation and service on offer is amongst the best in the country, with those behind the area’s hotels, guesthouses, campsites and self-catering properties going the extra mile to ensure that their guests have the best possible experience during their stay here.

Many are dog friendly, while some offer collection services from local train and bus stations to help you enjoy your stay in a more environmentally-sustainable way.

To help you choose where to stay, here are some of our favourites:

Blairgowrie

    1. If you’re staying in Blairgowrie itself, The Angus Hotel and Spa in the centre of the town is a family-run hotel with a range of rooms. The former coaching inn also has a choice of two great restaurants and a lounge bar, and its chefs use the finest local produce to create appetising menus to suit all tastes and budgets. The recently revamped spa is perfect for hotel guests to enjoy a range of tranquil and relaxing wellness experiences.
    2. Blairgowrie Holiday Park is a friendly, family-run, five-star caravan park offering holiday home ownership, hot tub lodges, caravans and touring pitches all year round. Set in beautifully landscaped, terraced gardens on the edge of the town, it was voted as the ‘Best Holiday Park’ in Scotland at the 2022 Scottish Hospitality Awards.
    3. The family-run Ericht Holiday Lodges offer peace and tranquility just a ten-minute walk from Blairgowrie town centre. Cosy and welcoming, the six wooden lodges have free Wi-fi, private parking, and internet access.
    4. Invermay is an attractive Victorian villa just a mile from the town centre. Fully equipped with pretty much everything you could possibly need for your stay – including a wood-burning stove, a large breakfasting kitchen and a separate dining room – the house can sleep up to eight adults and a couple of wee ones and is surrounded by lovely mature gardens with a patio/barbecue area and a summerhouse.
    5. Built in 1840, Kinloch House Hotel on the outskirts of Blairgowrie is a fine example of a traditional Scottish country house. With an oak-panelled hall, staircase and portrait gallery, the elegant house stands proudly in twenty-five acres of woodland and parkland. No stay here would be complete without the real pleasure of a meal in the restaurant where the award-winning chef makes the most of the freshest and finest local ingredients, creating culinary delights for your enjoyment.
    6. McArthur Manor is an exclusive use venue in the heart of Blairgowrie where you are the VIP guests! Your hosts will work with you to tailor your stay to your exact requirements. Every stay at McArthur Manor is unique, with a package of services built for you.
    7. Smithy Cottage is a gorgeous, traditional stone cottage near the pretty village of Meikleour, which is home to the longest hedge in Britain and the highest of its kind in the world at some 100 ft (30 m) high. Enjoy a pleasant and relaxing setting with wonderful views over open countryside, all just a few miles from Blairgowrie.

Glenisla

  1. Fancy staying in a luxury, off-grid shepherd’s hut in the heart of Cateran Country? CraicN Accomodation’s stunning hand-crafted shepherd’s hut Bruadar – Gaelic for dream or dreaming – offers guests an opportunity to escape everyday life and reconnect with nature and the environment with all the comforts of home.
  2. Larch Cottage is a lovely self-catering chalet in Glenisla, close to the banks of the River Isla itself. Furnished to a high standard, it is a great base for a family holiday in this picturesque glen – giving you the freedom to explore the area at your own pace.
  3. The Glenisla Hotel is another hidden gem, with 10 beautifully decorated rooms, all with en-suite facilities. Recently modernised, the hotel – which dates back to the 18th century – retains its charm and original character, with guests able to enjoy the rustic ambience of the whisky and wine bar, sample local real ales or single malts, and choose from a range of tasty treats on the menu.

Glenshee and Strathardle

  1. Glenkilrie B&B is located on a working hill farm between Blairgowrie and Glenshee and just of the Snow Route. Stay in the beautiful en-suite rooms and enjoy a delicious home-cooked breakfast courtesy of your hosts – the perfect way to start your day!
  2. If getting away from it all is what you’re after then Cateran Rest near Kirkmichael has the perfect location – three log cabins offering what the owner’s describe as a ‘remedy for modern life’.
  3. Strathardle Lodge in Kirkmichael is a licensed guest house with an unusual twist – it is also a cake school! A range of regular cake decorating courses are run on the premises with award-winning cake decorator Paul who has made cakes for the Queen, Prince Charles, Prince Albert of Monaco and numerous A-list celebrities. Over the last two decades he has built a reputation for being one of the best in the industry – and you could find out his recipe for success with a stay here!
  4. Located on the edge of the Cairngorm National Park and just a few miles out of Blairgowrie, Corriefodly is a great base for exploring the national park and the beautiful glens and woodlands, rivers, and waterfalls of Perthshire Big Tree Country. This four-star family friendly holiday park offers exceptional quality and service and is the perfect base for your holiday with lodges, caravans and touring pitches available.

The Strathmore area on the southern edge of Catera The Strathmore area on the southern edge of Cateran Country and east Perthshire is home to rolling farmland and the historic villages of Coupar Angus and Meigle, as well as many other hamlets in between.

Meigle lies on the south-east edge of Perthshire and is believed by many to have once been an important Pictish centre – the Sculptured Stone Museum, based in the former village schoolhouse, has an impressive collection of Pictish carved stones dating from the late 8th century to the late 10th century on display.

Meanwhile, Coupar Angus was once an important place of trade through its Abbey – one of the richest in Scotland at one point – though little of this monastic settlement remains today.

Ever wondered why we’re known as ‘Cateran Country’ Ever wondered why we’re known as ‘Cateran Country’ and who the caterans were?

The name derives from the Gaelic word ceatharn meaning ‘warrior’ and came to be associated with cattle raiding, particularly in places like Glenshee, Glenisla and Strathardle.

Today though, cateran country is best known for the Cateran Trail - a 64-mile / 103 km route through Perthshire and the Angus glens and one of Scotland’s Great Trails. It is also Scotland’s only long-distance circular route.

Are you planning a visit to walk some – or even all – of it this year?
