Enjoy a Stay at Bruadar Shepherds Hut
Run by local couple Clare and Alex McMicking, Bruadar is a luxury off-grid shepherd’s hut in the heart of rural Scotland offering guests an opportunity to escape everyday life and reconnect with nature and the environment.
Clare and Alec have a shared love of campervanning, tiny houses and off-grid sustainable living and, over the last 15 or so years, Alec has fitted out several campervans as well as a narrowboat which was his home for a number of years.
They are inspired by living well in small spaces, being connected to nature, the landscape and the environment without compromising on comfort or style, and have brought all of this passion and experience to their latest venture – a lovingly hand-crafted shepherd’s hut in the hills of Glenisla where they both grew up.
Bruadar is located on a hillside in Glenisla, the most westerly of the Angus Glens, and just north of the 500-million-year-old Highland Boundary Fault – the great geological feature that divides the Scottish Highlands from the Lowlands.

The Cateran Trail, one of Scotland’s long-distance walks, passes through Glenisla, and the area also features heavily as part of the innovative new Cateran Ecomuseum, a museum without walls which aims to showcase everything that the area has to offer in an environmentally responsible way.
There are Pictish Stones nearby, the spectacular Reekie Linn waterfall, hill walking, skiing at the glen of the fairies – Glenshee – local kayaking and wildlife tours, links to the legends of King Arthur and the Irish giant Finn mac Cumhaill as well as the Jacobite rebellions of the 18th century, and fables of Caterans themselves – Highland clan warriors who came to be associated with cattle raiding.
There are also more contemporary histories of the Scottish Traveller community to discover as well as that of Scotland’s berry capital, Blairgowrie, just 10 miles away, and home to a number of independent retailers and food outlets, a Tesco and some fabulous restaurants.
And to the west is the pretty market town of Kirriemuir, the birthplace of JM Barrie of Peter Pan fame, and Bon Scott, one of the founding members of legendary rock band AC/DC.
Although it is within just two hours’ drive of Edinburgh and Glasgow, Glenisla is still very much a well-kept secret, offering all the seclusion you could possibly want to get away from it all. Indeed, the nearest building to Bruadar is a historic stone cottage around half a mile away.
Clare and Alex say that “building our beautiful off-grid shepherd’s hut in this stunning location has been a dream of ours from a long time, and it is the ideal spot for guests to while away the hours during their stay just day-dreaming – either outside on the hillside, down by the river, in the nearby woods or snuggled in front of the cosy wood-burning stove.
“You can escape to the hut and hideaway, forgetting day-to-day life for the duration of your stay, or use it as a base to explore the rich history and culture of the surrounding area.”
