Picturesque Alyth is a historic trading-town dating from at least the 12th century and located on the edge of the Cairngorms where Highland farmers would bring their sheep and cattle to lowland markets.
In 1488, James III of Scotland granted Alyth the status of Burgh of Barony, permitting the town to stage markets and fairs.
Following a recent and extensive refurbishment of the town centre focal point, the pretty square in the heart of Alyth once again hosts popular summer and winter markets, both organised by Alyth Development Trust, and which feature a range of local producers.
A day spent in Alyth should start in the Market Square where you can find out more about the history of the town – including that of the gorgeous 16th century Packhorse Bridge and the Arches – thanks to new information boards along the burnside.
Just across the burn from the square is Alyth Museum – one of only two in Perthshire outside Perth and home to the new Cateran Ecomuseum Hub. Open during the summer months, it provides a window to the long and illustrious past of this wee town – for example, did you know that there are links to the legend of King Arthur in this part of the world? Once you have been inspired by the exhibitions in Alyth Museum, head out of the town centre on a short walk to a walk to the Den o’ Alyth, a delightful spot that is a site of special scientific interest thanks to a varied habitat sheltered by beech woods. If you are lucky, you might even spot a red squirrel or two.
From the beautiful Den o’ Alyth you can head up to Alyth Hill where you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the town below – weather permitting obviously! Alyth Hill is also home to Alyth Bike Park, a small trail centre on the outskirts of the town. Looked after by volunteers it is open all year round and free to ride.
Back in town, the Diamond Jubilee Park is the perfect spot for a picnic. Alyth Development Trust recently secured funding to upgrade the paths in the park to ensure they are cycle and wheelchair friendly and also installed new benches and play equipment – perfect for wee ones!
And no trip to Alyth is complete without trying your hand at golf! The award-winning Strathmore Golf Centre has something for players of all ages and abilities and has gone from strength to strength since opening three decades ago. And the centre’s restaurant is also the perfect place to enjoy an evening meal to round off your day in Alyth.
