Cake school is the icing on top of a stay at the historic Strathardle Lodge
Strathardle Lodge sits on the eastern edge of the picturesque village of Kirkmichael in Cateran Country.
The former drovers’ inn dates back to the 18th century and is located directly across from the Bannerfield where, in 1715, the Jacobites gathered as they prepared for the rising that year.
It was a key location for hundreds of years, and today still sits on a convergence of paths and networks, perfect for walking, cycling or sightseeing slightly further afield with the Cairngorms, Killiecrankie, Pitlochry, Glenshee and Blairgowrie all within a short drive.
And now, after being taken over by owners David and Paul in 2021, Strathardle Lodge is a licensed guest house with an unusual twist – it is also a cake school.
A range of regular cake decorating courses are run on the premises with award-winning cake decorator Paul who has made cakes for the Queen, Prince Charles, Prince Albert of Monaco and numerous A-list celebrities. Over the last two decades he has built a reputation for being one of the best in the industry.
Paul’s greatest passion is teaching and sharing his knowledge with others, and he has taught all over the world. Together with David – a former Perth lad – they are committed to showcasing the beautiful east Perthshire countryside to as wide an audience as possible from Strathardle Lodge.

Amongst the courses on offer are a two-day chocolate making masterclass, a five-day wedding cake course, a five-day icing course, and Christmas cake making courses. Paul also offers private one-to-one tutorial sessions, tailored to meet in the individual needs of participants.
David says: “We wanted to create a rural getaway in the heart of the Perthshire Highlands and when Strathardle Lodge became available we knew it was the perfect place to do that.
“Our aim is to combine a wonderful Highland hospitality welcome with a relaxing retreat offering guests an opportunity to enhance their creative skills on one of the cake courses.
“Paul is a fantastic teacher and his courses always fill up quickly. He puts everyone at ease the minute they walk through the door and wants everyone to leave their class with a huge smile and a cake they never thought they would make.”
Strathardle Lodge has a range of double and family rooms and suites and is dog-friendly.
And if making cakes isn’t enough, the Lodge also has 200 meters of river frontage with fishing rights.
With students already coming to Strathardle Lodge from all over the world, it seems David and Paul may just have found the perfect recipe for success.
